Flawless: The Tan Girl's Guide to Highlighters

01:36:00

Highlighters are probably my favourite makeup products next to foundation. I am living for that glowy life! So now, as a highlighter junkie, who is also tan-skinned, I shall guide you to the world of shimmer and shine.

Step One: Complete Your Collection

Firstly, you should have three different basic highlight shades which are champagne, pearl and pink. These are the most basic of highlighters that any makeup junkie can have in their collection.

Step Two: Know Your Highlighters

Next, formulations. Your highlight could come in powder, cream, or cream to powder. I have yet to hear about powder to cream but if you do, do let me know I'd be down for that.

The rules for highlighter formulations apply just as regular base makeup; liquids before powder. Now I don't mean that you have to put on your cream highlighter before you set your face with powder, but I'll get onto that later.

Cream highlighters tend to give a more "natural" effect as it's easier to blend out to the skin and you don't see any powder sitting on top of your high points. Powder highlighters are definitely more intense because you're able to layer them on, intensifying it at a specific area as you go. But of course, you can always put on a cream highlighter first then set it with a powder one.

Step Three: Highlighting Areas

Make sure to apply highlighter on after your base makeup (foundation, concealer and setting powder). The main areas you should apply highlighter on are the top of your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, and right above your brow bone.

These areas lit will give you a beautiful glow, which seems as though it's natural, since it's right where the light would hit your face. If you want that extra glow, apply the highlighter from the top of your cheekbones sweeping it upwards to the top of your brow bone. When you turn your face, or someone is viewing you from your profile, you'll glow for the gods.

Step Four: Know Your Shades

For a more natural look, opt for a champagne highlighter. Being tan, the champagne will blend nicely into the skin making your skin look healthy and lit-from-within instead of looking like a streak of white across your cheek.

For something intense, use a pearl shade. Make sure to not be too heavy-handed with the product because too much can look odd on our olive skin. Blend it out evenly so that it looks one with your makeup instead of an airport landing strip.

Lastly, for something intense but on the natural side; use a pink. I'm not talking about a hot, punch-you-in-the-face pink, but a soft, muted pink. the pink shade will give your skin a more intense glow compared to the champagne, but it won't be as much as the pearl.
