Beginner's Makeup: How to Ace Foundation

10:45:00

Starting off in the makeup world, you see thousands of posts on instagram and twitter of girls with flawless makeup, looking like a masterpiece, and all we can do is stare and screenshot the photo while we try our hardest to achieve something that seems to be a gift from the Makeup Gods. But when you're a beginner, it seems 10 times more complicated than it really is. So sit back, relax, and read on to figure out how to do your foundation like a pro.

1. Types of Foundation

First of all, you'll need to know what type of foundations there are. I know when googling "types of foundations", the answer that pops up can be pretty overwhelming. So, to make it short and sweet, there are two types of foundation; liquid and powder. Currently, liquid foundation has been taking over the shelves of drugstores and high-end makeup stores mainly because of how versatile liquid foundation can be, whereas powder foundation works better on oily or combination skin specifically.

2. Match Your Foundation

When walking into Sephora or any drugstore, you could be thrown off by the wide array of shades provided. Things get even tougher when we get scared to ask the beauty adviser's help because we don't want to seem daft about makeup. Don't be. Gather up all that courage, and ask them for some help to figure out your shade.

Only thing is, you don't get that type of help at the drugstore. So, for the drugstore, I recommend you to pick up 3 shades of foundation testers that you think will suit you, and swatch them from the bottom of your cheek to your neck, then blend. The shade that matches your neck (not face) should be the one that suits you best.

3. Know Your Skin Type

Numero uno rule in buying foundation, know your skin type. You'll either have oily, combination (combination of dry and oily) or dry skin. If you're oily, you'll want something that's oil-free, and controls shine, which is basically a mattifying foundation. For combination skin, you (thankfully) have the option of either matte or dewy foundation. For dry skin, you'll need to find something that hydrates and has a luminous or satin finish to it as a matte foundation can make your skin look drier and flat.

4. What Coverage Do You Want

If you're intimidated by the thought of effing up, go for something with sheer coverage. If you need something that'll help cover up blemishes and scars, but not too heavy, go for a medium coverage foundation. Full coverage means that anything and everything will be covered. Full coverage is usually on the heavier side, but you can find lightweight full coverage foundations if you need to use something with full coverage on a daily basis. I mean, come on, who wants their makeup to feel like a mask?

5. Primer is Key

I cannot emphasise on how important primer is! Always use a good primer, whether oily or dry skinned. Primer helps give you a smooth canvas to work on, evens everything out so that your foundation can look flawless af and helps the foundation to adhere better so that you won't have your makeup slipping and sliding all over the place.

6. Blend, blend, blend!

For flawless foundation, blending is key! Certain tools can be used to apply foundation such as brushes or sponges. If you're looking for a fool-proof technique to achieve an airbrushed finish to your foundation application, I highly recommend a beauty sponge such as the Beauty Blender or the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. A sponge will help you get even application and push the foundation into your skin without the fear of any tell-tale signs aka streak marks on your face.

7. Set Everything

Lastly, set your foundation with a setting powder. A setting powder should be translucent or tinted, and can be either pressed or loose. Setting your foundation will ensure long-wear and oil control for oily skin. Powdering can also help allow other powder products blend easier onto the skin.

I remember when I was younger, I thought foundation was weird and scary, yet now I obsess over foundation like a belieber obsesses over Justin Bieber. Oh well, why don't you tell me your first experience with makeup? Comment below!

Lots of love,
Taty
